Further Mathematics Support Programme in Wales

This Page in Welsh

The pilot Further Mathematics Support Programme (FMSP) Wales is a Welsh Assembly Government funded initiative. It is managed by the Wales Institute of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (WIMCS), a collaborative partnership of the universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Glamorgan and Swansea, and supported by Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI).

The aims of the FMSP Wales are to:

  • raise an awareness among students and their parents of the value of studying Mathematics at higher levels;
  • increase the number of students in Wales studying AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics;
  • increase the number of schools and colleges in Wales offering Further Mathematics;
  • increase the number of students from Wales applying to study higher education courses in Mathematics and Mathematically-rich subjects such as Engineering, Physics, IT, Finance and Economics;
  • improve the transition of students from further to higher education courses in Mathematics or courses which have a significant element of Mathematics thus benefiting the wider economy.

Our main aim is to provide Further Mathematics GCE AS/A2 level tuition for all English and Welsh awarding bodies to students who cannot access Further Mathematics through their local 11-18 schools or colleges within the pilot area. The pilot area in the counties of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot and schools and colleges near the boundaries of those counties. Tuition is available from January 2011.

All schools and colleges in Wales both inside and outside the pilot area are invited to register with the FMSP Wales to obtain free single user teacher access to the Integral Further Maths resources offered by MEI, which cover five Further Mathematics specifications (AQA, Edexcel, MEI, OCR and WJEC). They include all of the AS/A level Further Pure modules and almost all of the AS/A level Applied Mathematics modules for the English specifications. The Further Mathematics resources support FP1-3, S1-3 and M1-3 modules of the WJEC specification. The resources also include materials to support the teaching and learning of Mathematics within the Level 3 Engineering Diploma.

Schools and colleges may also subscribe to online students’ access to GCSE, Additional Maths, A-level Maths and FM resources. The annual subscription costs £240 per 10 student logins. Additional student logins can be purchase at a reduced cost. This includes the students’ record system for teachers, students’ online tasks and progress tracking system as well as Core A-level Mathematics resources for teachers. For more information please visit Integral Mathematics Resources pages

Student tuition for AS/A level Further Mathematics in or near the pilot area - The FMSP Wales Area Coordinator is an expert in teaching and learning Mathematics at this level and experienced at working with Mathematics teachers. The Area Coordinator will work with schools and colleges to support and promote the study of AS/A level Further Mathematics and to arrange Further Mathematics tuition for students when their schools and colleges cannot provide it themselves within the pilot area. Experienced tutors will support your students studying towards AS or A levels across five specifications MEI, AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC.

Tuition

Whenever possible, FMSP Wales will arrange face-to-face tuition for students in the pilot area. Schools and colleges will pay tuition fees only. The cost of the FMSP Wales tuition is £202 per module (e.g. Further Pure 1) per pupil.

Schools and colleges can claim funding for Further Mathematics qualifications studied through the FMSP Wales in exactly the same way as for any other AS/A2 qualification. Further Mathematics AS and A2 qualifications consist of 3 modules each. The cost of FMSP Wales tuition for one module is one third of the base rate funding schools and colleges receive from DCELLS for one student studying towards an AS or A2 qualification.

Schools and colleges only pay the FMSP Wales for the modules they cannot offer themselves. The FMSP Wales can provide tuition for 1 out of 3 modules, 2 out of 3 modules or can support your students through all three modules required for an AS/A2 qualification.

To arrange tuition with the FMSP Wales please contact adminwales@furthermaths.org.uk or ring 01792 606609.

Individuals, independent schools and state-funded schools outside the pilot area are also welcome to contact the FMSP Wales about Further Mathematics tuition through FMSP Wales.

Mae'n cael ei rheoli gan Sefydliad Gwyddorau Mathemategol a Chyfrifiadurol Cymru (WIMCS), partneriaeth ar y cyd rhwng prifysgolion Aberystwyth, Bangor, Caerdydd, Morgannwg ac Abertawe, gyda chefnogaeth Mathemateg ym myd Addysg a Diwydiant (MEI).

Nod Rhaglen Gymorth Mathemateg Bellach Cymru yw:

  • codi ymwybyddiaeth ymysg myfyrwyr a'u rhieni o werth astudio Mathemateg ar lefelau uwch;
  • cynyddu nifer y myfyrwyr yng Nghymru sy'n astudio UG/Uwch Mathemateg a Mathemateg Bellach;
  • cynyddu nifer yr ysgolion a'r colegau yng Nghymru sy'n cynnig Mathemateg Bellach;
  • cynyddu nifer y myfyrwyr o Gymru sy'n gwneud cais i astudio cyrsiau addysg uwch mewn Mathemateg a phynciau sy'n defnyddio llawer o Fathemateg fel Peirianneg, Ffiseg, TG, Cyllid ac Economeg;
  • Gwella trosglwyddo myfyrwyr o gyrsiau addysg bellach i addysg uwch mewn Mathemateg neu gyrsiau sydd ag elfen gref o Fathemateg a hynny felly o fantais i'r economi ehangach.

Ein prif nod yw darparu addysgu lefel UG/Uwch Mathemateg Bellach ar gyfer pob corff dyfarnu yng Nghymru a Lloegr i fyfyrwyr nad ydyn nhw'n gallu cael mynediad i Fathemateg Bellach drwy eu hysgolion neu golegau 11-18 lleol yn yr ardal beilot. Yr ardal beilot yw siroedd Penfro, Caerfyrddin, Abertawe a Chastell-nedd Port Talbot ac ysgolion a cholegau sy’n ffinio â'r siroedd hynny. Mae sesiynau addysgu ar gael o fis Ionawr 2011.

Gwahoddir pob ysgol a choleg yng Nghymru yn yr ardal beilot a'r tu allan iddi i gofrestru gyda FMSP Cymru i gael mynediad athrawon i un defnyddiwr am ddim i'r adnoddau Mathemateg Bellach Integredig y mae MEI yn eu cynnig, sy'n cwmpasu pum manyleb Mathemateg Bellach (AQA, Edexcel, MEI, OCR a CBAC). Maen nhw'n cynnwys pob un o fodiwlau Pur Pellach safon UG/Uwch a bron y cyfan o fodiwlau Mathemateg Gymhwysol lefel UG/Uwch i'r manylebau Seisnig.
