Enrichment for KS4 and sixth form

The Further Mathematics Support Programme aims to support the enrichment of students’ experience of mathematics wherever possible. There is particular focus on students at Key Stages 3 and 4 as well as at sixth-form level. Formats used to provide such enrichment include:

• Workshops/Hands-on Sessions
• Quizzes and Competitions
• A level Mathematics & Further Mathematics and University Mathematics Taster Sessions
• Student Conferences
• Residential Courses
• Video Conferencing

STEP/AEA Tuition from MEI

MEI provides real-time on-line tutorials and teaching sessions in STEP and AEA Mathematics. For any student/teacher interested in finding out more, please see the MEI website.

Senior Team Mathematics Challenge

A national team mathematics competition for students in years 11-13.

Year 10 Mathematics Team Competition

February & March 2012

Eleven heats across the region (see the East of England regional page for full details, including a list of venues.)
We are pleased to announce that once again we will be running our Year 10 Team Mathematics Competition in the East of England. This is a competition for testing mathematical, communication and teamwork skills. There will be 11 heats taking place across the region. Successful teams who secure either first or second place at their heat will also be invited to take part in a final event on Thursday 10th May 2012 at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, University of Cambridge. Full details about the heats including entry requirements, entry fee and competition content can be downloaded here. This year the study round for the heats will be on "Distance and Position on the Earth" so students should make sure they are familiar with this topic in preparation for their heat.

Masterclasses at Oxford University

Friday 16th March - Numbers and Codes

This is an introduction to modular or clockwork arithmetic and goes on to explain how it is used in RSA Cryptography – the maths behind internet security.

Friday 22nd June (provisional - possibly 15th June) - Mathematical Biology

Mathematics is becoming increasingly involved in modelling the way biological systems behave – e.g. how predators and prey might interact and how epidemics can spread. We also see how some systems can very easily become chaotic in their behaviour.

These sessions all take place at 2pm – 4.30pm and are aimed at year 11-13 students. There is a charge of £2 per student to cover costs, payable in advance. Places are allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis, so book early to avoid disappointment. Final deadline: 10 days before event. Light refreshments are provided.
