Onwards and Upwards: Teaching A2 Further Mathematics
Do you want to take your Further Mathematics teaching to the next level? This course takes a detailed look at the content of the A2 Further Pure Mathematics modules as well as an overview of the applied modules that can complement them. You will find out how to introduce difficult abstract mathematical concepts in an accessible way, how to help students develop their higher mathematical skills and how to develop resources that provide challenge for your most able students.

Getting Started in Further Maths: Teaching AS Further Mathematics
If you want to find out what is involved in teaching Further Mathematics at AS level, this course will be ideal for you. You will gain an insight into the Further Pure Mathematics 1 modules for each examination board and some of the applied mathematics - the key ideas and content, the most common exam errors, exemplars of good practice in introducing each topic and useful resources to help with your own teaching.

A Further Pure 1 CPD day
This FP1 CPD day is suitable for teachers of all specifications, AQA, Edexcel, MEI and OCR. It will provide teachers with the subject knowledge and skills to teach Further Pure 1 with confidence. Other aims of the day are:

  • to demonstrate effective methods for motivating students to study the topics in Further Pure 1, including modern application in the real world (internet search engines, computer graphics, data compression.
  • to increase engagement by using active learning resources.
  • to demonstrate the use of ICT in Further Pure 1
  • to briefly show how the topics in Further Pure 1 can be enriched and extended.

The cost of the day is £50 and includes lunch.

Applied Mathematics Modules in Mathematics and Further Mathematics
This free CPD session will focus on aspects of the Applied modules and is suitable for both new and experienced teachers of A level and Further Mathematics. There will be a choice of 2 sessions from Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths covering both subject knowledge and real world applications. Free buffet (to be served at 6pm)

Weekly STEP/AEA Preparation Course - University of Warwick

From January 2010 to June 2010, the University of Warwick will be running a weekly session to help prepare for the STEP/AEA examination(s). Both staff and students are able to attend these sessions, which will take place on Wednesday afternoons from 4pm to 6pm in the Maths Institute at the University of Warwick. The sessions will be quite informal and it is not necessary to attend all of the sessions. There will be 15 sessions in total plus two Saturday workshops (one in February and one in June) and the total cost for everything is £150. This exciting day is aimed at years 10, 11 and 12 to encourage those students who enjoy Maths to take it on to the next stage. This Year Matt Parker is the keynote speaker. There will also be a quiz and workshop sessions in the afternoon.

Revision days


A session of online and face-to-face revision events will be held during Spring and Summer 2011. The details of these events will be confirmed soon.

The FMSP will hold a series of online revision session for a large number of applied modules and all Further Pure modules during Summer 2011. Details will be available to all registered schools. Registration is free and can be done online.

A-level Core 2 Revision Day.

This day will consist of 3 separate events: one for each of the exam specifications for AQA, Edexcel and OCR(MEI).

This day is run as a series of workshops covering the content of all exam boards. Students can select the sessions they feel are most appropriate to their revision.

Numerical Methods Coursework afternoon 2pm-4:30pm with Dr Richard Lissaman.

If you have any students studying Numerical Methods as part of their Further Maths, they would find this afternoon invaluable in their understanding and execution of the coursework.

Places are limited, because each student will be in front of a PC or a laptop, so please book the number of places you require as soon as possible.

Cost per student is £5 to include handout materials and refreshments. Staff are free of charge.

This day will cover: Why you need mathematics GCSE; Getting the numbers right; Algebra without numbers; Algebra with numbers; Shaping up; Exam questions and quiz; how to get your examination technique correct.
