Year 10 Mathematics Team Competition

A team competition for students in year 10 testing mathematical, communication and team work skills. Heats will be taking place across the South East during February and March 2012. Successful teams will take part in an area or regional final. Further details will be available shortly.

Maths Inspiration

Entertaining and inspiring events for post-16 mathematics students.

Reading Town Hall, Thursday 1st December, 9.45am - 12.30pm and 1.00am - 3.45pm

Talks on 'How Maths built the Olympic Stadium', 'Maths on the back of an envelope' and 'The Maths of Juggling'.

These events are also suitable for more able/motivated Year 11s. Booking details online at: http://www.mathsinspiration.com/events.html

Masterclasses at Oxford University

We hope to offer these again during 2011-2012, but owing to a change of personell at the University, it will not be possible to arrange them until October. Watch this space! Details of last years events below...

Mathematical Biology

Mathematics is becoming increasingly involved in modelling the way biological systems behave – e.g. how predators and prey might interact and how epidemics can spread. We also see how some systems can very easily become chaotic in their behaviour.

Complex Numbers and Fractals

Fractals, like the Mandelbrot set became widely popular in the 80s as computers became more powerful. Many of the landscapes in computer games these days are generated using fractals. No prior knowledge of complex numbers is expected.

Numbers and Codes

This is an introduction to modular or clockwork arithmetic and goes on to explain how it is used in RSA Cryptography – the maths behind internet security.

These sessions all take place at 2pm – 4.30pm and are aimed at year 11-13 students. They are free, but places need to be booked in advance. Places are allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis, so book early to avoid disappointment. Final deadline: 10 days before event. Light refreshments are provided. Study Days

Introduction to Complex Numbers – Friday 16th September 2011 1.30pm - 5.00pm - Oxford. Work with other Further Mathematicians from Oxfordshire schools and get to grips with a significant part of the syllabus – if the whole class attends, this can save valuable lesson time.

Students will find out what complex numbers are, learn how to manipulate them, solve quadratic equations and represent them geometrically. They will also look at applications of complex numbers. The material to be covered is common to all examination boards and assumes no prior knowledge.

There will be a cost of £3 per student, provided that your school/college is registered with the FMSP, otherwise the cost will be £6 per student. Light refreshments will be provided. Deadline for registering a class: 15th July. Deadline for confirming attendance, final numbers and payment: Friday 9th September. Contact Alexandra Hewitt for information: alexandrahewitt@furthermaths.org.uk

A similar event is planned for Worthing in early October. For details, contact Gill Buque gillbuque@furthermaths.org.uk

Oxbridge Preparation Afternoon – these will run in Berkshire and Oxfordshire in October 2010.

Introduction to Hyperbolic Functions – Wednesday 29th February 2012 1.30pm - 5.00pm - Abingdon. Work with other Further Mathematicians from Oxfordshire schools and get to grips with a significant part of the syllabus – if the whole class attends, this can save valuable lesson time.

Students will find out what hyperbolic functions are, represent them graphically, use them in basic calculus and explore hyperbolic identities. Depending on time, it may also be possible to look at advanced integration. The material to be covered is common to all examination boards and assumes no prior knowledgeof hyperbolics. Students should be familiar with the exponential function, trigonometric identities and integration by substitution, and be able to integrate trigonometric functions.

There will be a cost of £3 per student, provided that your school/college is registered with the FMSP, otherwise the cost will be £6 per student. Light refreshments will be provided. Deadline for booking: Tuesday 13th December. Contact Alexandra Hewitt for information: alexandrahewitt@furthermaths.org.uk

Past Events

CPD Events

Introduction to S1 Friday 13th November 2009
This one-day course for aspiring or new teachers of Statistics at A Level was well received and in response to request from the delegates, a second training day has been arranged to cover more of the syllabus content.

Enrichment Events

Taking Maths Further 23 October 2009
This was the 4th annual 'Taking Maths Further' event at Aylesbury High School - aimed at encouraging Year 10 and 11 students to study mathematics beyond GCSE. Students and their teachers attended 3 x 80 minutes sessions in rota, including investigating complex numbers and the Mandelbrot Set using graphical calculators (James Toyer from Buckingham School and Nicki Studman from The Hazeley School, Milton Keynes) and catching criminals using Dijkstra’s Algorithm (Julia Brown from Wycombe High School and Ashley England from Dr Challoner's Grammar School). The students really enjoyed the day: "I didn't know what to expect, but it was great".

Maths in Space 8 October 2009
The Hants & IoW "Maths in Space" event was attended by 170 post-16 mathematics students. The event, including a talk on black holes, a planetarium show, and a host of exhibitions from companies and organisation involved in enterprises associated with space (such as satellite manufactures) took place at INTECH, Winchester.

Senior Team Mathematics Challenge

The best thing about this event is hearing the teams who come near the bottom saying how much they have enjoyed it and wanting to come back next year! It is so exciting being in a room of 80+ teenagers absolutely engrossed in solving mathematical problems. Some of the heats in the south-east have been very closely fought, so congratulations to the winning teams, who go through to the final on 3rd February: Abingdon School; Royal Latin School, Buckingham; Royal Grammar School, Guildford; Lord Wandsworth College, Hook; Reading School.

Oxford heat winners: Abingdon School

Hampshire heat winners: Lord Wandsworth College, Hook

A team from Surrey puzzle over the relay round

Wendover heat winners: Royal Latin School, Buckingham

Revision days

Decision Maths (D1) at the University of Reading, Wednesday 9th December 2009

Sue de Pomerai, Professional Development Leader for the FMSP led a complete review of the syllabus AQA and Edexcel in under 4 hours! Responses from the 40 students who attended were overwhelmingly positive.

Study Days

Introduction to Complex Numbers 21 September 2009

Students from 7 Oxfordshire schools got together to find out about complex numbers in an intensive but enjoyable afternoon. 47 students covered manipulation of complex numbers, solving quadratics and other polynomial equations, the Argand diagram and modulus/argument form; they completed a tricky jigsaw puzzle and played a relay race. Much of the material on complex numbers for FP1 (all exam boards) was covered.

Oxbridge preparation afternoons

At two separate events held, at Eton College and at Magdalen College School, Oxford. 26 students from Oxfordshire and Berkshire spent an afternoon solving problems, including an interview experience with feedback. We are hugely grateful to the staff from these colleges who made this possible.
