We need your ideas/suggestions!

In the past we have tried to organise many events intended to enthuse young people about Mathematics at KS3 and KS4 and also support teachers with the teaching of A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

On a number of occasions activities have not been supported and they have had to be cancelled – we fully appreciate the pressures on teachers and students in terms of time – and the ‘rarely cover’ policy has not helped enhancement.

We have found that the best way forward is to try to respond to ideas from teachers either in individual schools or in a consortium situation. What can we organise to help and support you in promoting Mathematics?

Our work can be split into three main categories:-

  1. Support for teaching Further Mathematics in schools (main priority)
  2. Support/CPD for teachers
  3. Support for students

The most important priority for us is to increase the number of students studying Mathematics and Further Mathematics in schools.

The Further Mathematics Support Programme website is full of ideas to support teachers. Would you be interested in:-

  • Learning more about the extensive range of on line resources for all A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics syllabuses. These make planning courses much easier for teachers – a full package which will save you so much preparation time. If you are registered with the FMSP you will be given free access to many of these resources. These resources are especially useful if you are faced with teaching courses on limited time.
  • Courses to introduce teachers to the skills and knowledge needed to tackle A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Most of us look forward to our A level teaching but some very capable colleagues lack confidence and we can provide activities to help and support them.
  • Promoting A level Further Mathematics within your school. If you feel that you do not have the expertise for this we would be pleased to help and possibly organise tutors to co-teach courses with a member of your staff.
  • Learning more about the Mathematics associated with the Engineering Diploma, especially level 3.
  • Exploring ways in which the curriculum at Key Stages 3,4 and 5 can be enhanced. We are especially interested in increasing the numbers of students who opt for A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics and also increasing interest in studying the STEM subjects in Higher Education. For ideas we have tried in the past please see below:
